NYC week 10

January 16, 2013

Familia!

Another week has come and gone, I can't believe it's P-day again already. I've almost been out for 5 months...the mission really does go by soooo fast!

Transfers are in two weeks and there are rumors going around that Sister Aguirre will be leaving me and I'll be getting a new companion! AHH! We'll see what happens.

This week has been great! Last wednesday we had dinner at the Young President's house. His name is Darrin Jackson and he served with our cousin Brock in South Carolina Make sure to contact brock and tell him that Darrin Jackson says hi!!
We talked to him about what we can do to help the youth in our ward prepare to go on missions, so if any of you (Katie, Willie, Sam) have any ideas of what would motivate you or HAS motivated you, let me know! We decided to focus on helping the youth getting their patriarchal blessings, because patriarchal blessings can do wonders in helping us figure out what Heavenly Father wants for us.

Last Thursday we had a sisters conference with all the sisters in the whole mission! President had it to talk to us and prepare us for all the sister missionaries we are going to be recieving soon. Heavenly Father was able to speak to me through the speakers and all my worries are gone. One of the sisters that talked said "Heavenly Father made you and he knows what you can do. Don't worry about it." The Spirit hit me so strong and I knew that if I was called to train soon everything would work out.

We have a less active in our ward named Norma, and this past week her son who is in Ecuador passed away. He was cleaning windows and fell. The bishop called us and we were able to go visit her, she was so sad but we prayed and sang hymns with her. I am so grateful for the opportunity I have to be the Lord's hands and comfort those that stand in need of comfort.

The other day we had just walked out of our church building and this random guy walks up to us and says:

Us: *walking towards the corner*
*random guy stops to talk to us*

Guy: If Jesus Christ comes back to earth and he is black , no one will know him and the people will murder him. The Mormon church is a jewish church because Joseph Smith was a jew and gave the people the torrah.
*Us staring at him, not knowing what to say*
Guy: (talking about apes and evolution or something)
Us: *Still don't what to say*
Guy: And no one ever listens to me because I look half monkey half ape. (promptly walks away)
Us: (look at each other and say what just happened?)

People are wierd.
We've gotten stuff like this lots of times, whether it's stuff like this or people telling us that the only way Jesus Christ is going to return is in a space ship.

The other day we were tracting in a building and found nothing, until we left the building and I saw a mom and her son so I started to talk to them. They are from Mexico and we asked if we could share a message about Jesus Christ so she said sure and let us into her apartment. She had SO many questions, like what is the difference between our church and the catholic church, what the book of mormon is, why there are so many different religions, and she expressed that she has been trying to find the right church but hasn't yet. This lady is the perfect description of D&C 20:12!!! :) She super legit. I am excited to go back and teach her on Saturday.

Yesterday on our way to service this guy we walked up looks at us and says "Hey how are you?" We thought he was hitting on us but we paused and he said "Your the mormons?" We said yes and he said "good". We had to take the opportunity so I asked him what he knows about the mormons and he said his brother is currently reading the book of mormon! He was super interested so we gave him a BOM and got his information so we can send the missionaries to where he lives. I love experiences like that were people recognize us as the missionaries and know that we can help them.

A few weeks ago we had an APF (where our whole zone gets together and attacks a single area. This particular time we set up a table with BOM's and pamphlets and talked to people on the street) and I met a few people who were really interested. One of these people is Bart, and I caught him as he was running by. I asked him if he would like to learn more about Christ and he said he was really busy and cold but he came over and said he had heard about the book of mormon. He said he's visiting from Belgium and he'll only be here for 6 months but he would like the missionaries to come over and teach him more. I figured he might have just been saying that so he could leave but...yesterday sister aguirre and I went to the chapel for a lesson and ran into some other sister missionaries and bart!! He said to me "I think we've met before right?" And I looked at him and thought "It's the guy! wow!" The sisters were going to teach him the first lesson. This experience was something really small but I feel like it was really a tender mercy because I was allowed to see one of the fruits of my labors. It was so sweet! If I hadn't of stopped him on the street who knows if he would have started investigating the church.

I encourage you all this week to read 1 Nephi 8. This is the chapter about the tree of life and it's sooooo awesome! See how many things you can relate to your own life. I love the BOM with all my heart and am only learning to love it more and more every day.

I am SOOO grateful for this opportunity heavenly father has given me to be a missionary and an instrument in his hands. it's so humbling and so marvelous and last night when I was praying I just wanted to scream because I was so happy and grateful for everything I am learning and accomplishing here! The mission is the best and although sometimes I get so frustrated and homesick I wouldn't trade this experience for anything. Missy and Willie hurry up and get your calls already so you can experience the awesomeness of a mission!!!!! :)

Love you all!!!!!!!
